While research is regularly conducted on the island of Vanikoro, in an effort to shed light on the tragic end of the crews of the of La Pérouse’s expedition, this book tells the story of two frigates on a voyage around the world that was meant to last four years.
In the port of Brest, in August 1785, the sailor and sometime writer, Pierre Le Goff, went aboard the Astrolabe, one of the expedition’s two ships, commanded by La Pérouse’s friend, Antoine Fleuriot de Langle, a member
of France’s Naval Academy. In his travel log, Le Goff evokes the long, hard months of sailing the cold seas of the North Pacific before setting out to discover Oceania, and Botany Bay, the last stopover before the voyage’s tragic end.
Alain Lozac’h, is a territorial engineer based in Brittany, France. He is the author of a dozen books, including a number of novels and a two-volume publication devoted to Breton harbours.
